God is God, you’re not!
Exodus 10:3, “And Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him Thus says the Lord, the God, of the Hebrew’, ’How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go; that they may serve Me.’”
Humbling ourselves is not an easy thing. It is tantamount to admitting that someone else is better at something than we are. In the case of humbling yourself before God it is admitting that He is just plain better than you are.
It’s similar to saying what Isaiah said in his vision of the Lord. In Isaiah 6:5 he says, “Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.”
Isaiah was admitting as we all should when we come before God that we are nothing. Humility and humiliate are too often used as synonyms the word humiliate or humiliated is about making yourself look bad. Believe me I know because I’ve humiliated myself plenty of time. The word humility has nothing to do with looking bad, but it’s admitting that no matter how good you think you are there’s someone better, namely God.
Webster’s Dictionary says that the definition of humiliate is “to lower the pride or dignity of”, and the definition of humility is “the state or quality of being humble in mind or spirit”. Humility is a quality that we should all strive for, and we should not be satisfied until we reach it. Humility is a virtue; like patience, it only comes to us through maturity, and by the grace of God. Proud or arrogant people are immature people. Only when we see God for who He truly is can we humble ourselves before Him, and at the same time be exalted. I know it’s a paradox that we don’t understand on this earth. (I Corinthians 13:12)
Jesus Christ whom we should imitate in all things was the most humble man to walk the face of the earth. Philippians 2:5-8 says that even though Jesus was God in the flesh, and had everything (I mean everything) at His disposal He did not consider it, but He died on a cruel Roman cross for us. That is the ultimate picture of humility that we have been called to imitate. I believe that when Jesus went to the cross at Calvary He was humbling himself before God, and therefore verses 9-11 say that God has given Him a name higher than anyone elses. God exalts those who humble themselves. I know that sounds backwards to our way of thinking, but Jesus said in Luke 9:24, “Whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.” I know your head may be spinning because that doesn’t make sense to you. I agree it doesn’t make sense to the human mind; losing your life to find it???????????????????? WHAT?????????That’s what Jesus said, and more than say it He proved it. He died on the cross; He was buried, but now He’s alive and sits at the right hand of God. I believe God also wants to honor you when you humble yourself. Now, obviously you will not be honored as Jesus was, but if you humble yourself before God you will be called a child of God; and you will become a co-heir with Christ. (Romans 8:17)
Father, I ask that you would give me the humility of Christ, so that I might be honored by you as I lift Your holy name. Amen
