I can only imagine
Revelation 21:2, “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.”
Yesterday, would have been my dad’s 71 birthday, but daddy went home to be with the Lord two years ago. I have been reflecting and remembering a lot about this great man of God who taught me how to play baseball, catch and clean fish, shoot a gun, drive a car; but most importantly he taught me to always trust in God. I have been thinking about how sad it was sitting in the church looking at his coffin, and listening to the preacher; but most of all I’ve been trying to think about what daddy saw and is still seeing as he gazes at God’s glory.
I like Contemporary Christian music, and I’ve been considering the song “I can only imagine” by MercyMe. With all due respect to MercyMe I don’t think we can even imagine the gloriousness of heaven. I believe, the description of the Apostle John here in Revelation chs. 21-22 is only what his finite mind could come up with. The truth is heaven will be so great that there are no words that can describe it. Quoting from the prophet Isaiah the Apostle Paul says in II Corinthians 2:9, “…Eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for them that love Him.”
The truth is we cannot fathom, or imagine, what heaven will be like; our minds would explode if we tried to describe heaven. Just like many of the mysteries of God, heaven is far beyond our comprehension. In Isaiah 55:8-9 God says, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than yours.”
Yes, as people it is only natural for us to miss loved ones after they have gone, but we must remember that if they knew the Lord as Savior then they are truly in a place that we cannot even imagine; and when we call upon His name for salvation then we will join them to gaze upon His glories!
Father, I thank You that You have prepared a place for me in your glory that is so splendid I cannot even imagine. In Jesus’ name. Amen
