Signs
Matthew 12:39, “But He answered and said unto them, ‘An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign, yet no sign shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah the Prophet; for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.’”
Since the creation of the world man has been searching for evidence of God, as if the earth in itself were not evidence enough. As humans we tend to believe only what we can see, and this visionary belief system serves us well most of the time; but as with any rule there are exceptions. The most basic exception to this rule of seeing is believing is that of oxygen. We cannot see oxygen, but we know it’s their; and we are painfully aware when it is absent. Another partial exception to this rule is that of the sun. Sometimes we can see the sun and sometimes we can’t, but we always no that it’s their; and that it will be back to us the next day because we have faith to believe in what we have seen.
Many people use this same philosophy when they are pondering the existence of God. They say, “If God would only give me a sign that I could see or feel then I would know for certain that He exists.” There are signs all around us that point to the existence of a loving God we only need to open our eyes and see His miracles.
Jesus said no sign shall be given to an evil and adulterous generation, but God also said that we will find Him when we search with all our heart; to see the miraculous signs that show us God’s existence we only need to close our eyes(metaphorically speaking) and open our hearts; then the evidences of God will be clearly seen.
God told Noah in Genesis 9:12-15 that He would never again destroy the earth by water. “And God said ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you…I set My bow in the cloud…And it shall come about when I bring a cloud over the earth…and I will remember My covenant…and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh.’” Every time we look to the sky and see a beautiful rainbow it is a reminder to us that there is a loving God who we can rely on.
God also told Moses that he should take the blood of a lamb and spread it over the doorposts of the children of Israel, and that the blood of the Lamb was a sign to them of God’s grace. (Exodus 12:13) Every time you see a representation of how Jesus died on the cruel Roman cross, and shed His blood it is a reminder of God’s grace.
“And the next day, he (John the Baptist) saw Jesus coming to him, and said ‘Behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.’”-John 1:29
“And the Lord Himself will give you a sign; Behold a virgin will be with child, and bear a Son, and she shall call His name Immanuel.“-Isaiah7:14
Jesus Christ was and is the sign from God that His love is with us, and He will never leave us.
Father, I thank you for the signs of Your existence all around me, and I ask that in the days when I have doubts You remind to see Your signs; and bring to my mind Your greatest sign. Your Son, Jesus Christ, who shed His blood that I might know the depth of Your love for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
