Are others blessed by you?
“And you and your sons and your servants shall cultivate the land for him, and you shall bring in the produce that your master’s grandson may have food; nevertheless Mephibosheth your master’s grandson shall eat at my table regularly. Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.” II Samuel 9:10
This is the story of David blessing the son of Jonathan after he arose to be king. If you have never read the story of Mephibosheth then I invite you to read II Samuel 9. It gives a perfect illustration of how God takes us in despite our weaknesses, and provides for our every need.
Ziba, was a servant of Saul; David’s enemy, but after David arose to be king he sought for someone who was left of that house. This was not uncommon during that time because every new king usually sought out the family of the previous king to kill them, and therefore erase any threat they might be. What was unusual was that David did not seek out Mephibosheth to get rid of him, but he sought him out so that he could bless him. That is a perfect picture of how God has sought each of us so that he can bless us. God has sought us out even though we are descendants of the devil, (John 8:44) “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father…”, and we are the enemy of God, (James 4:4) “… Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend to the world makes himself an enemy to God.” In our natural state we desire to follow our flesh, and do things of this world which are against God; however, God because of His love and mercy toward us sought us out through Jesus Christ, and provided a way that we might “eat at His table regularly.”
The mercy of God; that is portrayed by David, does not stop with Mephibosheth, much in the way that God’s mercy does not stop with us. We see that Ziba and his sons and servants were also blessed because of the mercy that was given to Mephibosheth.
When you and I choose to accept the mercy of God we are blessed far beyond our wildest dream, but not only are we blessed but those around us are blessed by our obedience. They are blessed because we are overflowing with the richness of God that those blessings touch their lives, and they might also come to know and accept the mercy of God because they see what is done in our lives. When they accept the mercy of God then others will be affected, etc, etc. It’s a never ending story that can begin with you, so what do you say? God has already sent the invitation to you; the question now is will you accept His invitation and be filled with His mercy and grace.
