Life after Death
“And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgement.” Hebrews 9:27
As human beings death is a part of life. We begin to die the second we’re born(okay maybe the second second) death is who we are. It’s what we do. As depressing as that might sound death is the only reality that everyone will eventually encounter. There is an old saying that says, Only 2 things are certain, DEATH AND TAXES.
I have a few Television shows that I watch when I have the chance; these shows that I watch are(for better or worse) usually the type that show the deep depravity of mankind. I like, as a rule, most cop shows, and in alot of the episodes they deal with death. I was watching a show a while back, and one of the main characters had just been through a horrific event. She was in an almost catatonic, comatose state; she was walking around and aware of things around her, but she would not talk. Anyway one of the other characters was speaking with her and she finally responded by saying, “I’m already dead. We can’t fight death.” I thought that was a very profound statement because you and I are dead we are walking around in human bodies, and our hearts are pumping; but in reality we are as dead as anyone that has ever been lowered in a grave. Ephesians 2:1 says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.” Is everyone depressed after this conversation about death. Don’t you all think that this is a good Monday morning devotion? Before you answer that question finish reading because I promise it get’s better.
Ephesians 2:1 reminds us that we’re dead, but 2:4-5 says, “But God being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions made us alive together with Christ(by grace you have been saved).
We are dead in our flesh. I think about that movie from the late 60’s, “Night of the Living Dead”. People who were dead came out of their graves, and began walking around. It was a really low budget horror flick, but in many ways that movie is similar to all Christians. We were dead in this world maybe we were not buried in a grave, but the Bible states that we are as dead as anyone that has ever been lowered in a grave. However, it also reminds us that once we accept the free gift of Salvation offered by God that we can come out of that grave, and live a life of victory! Knowing that we will never again taste the sourness of death!

Father, I thank You for giving me the gift of Your Son to rescue me from death, and I ask that You would help me to live my new life knowing that I am now and forever alive in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
