Good Morning!
Good Morning(afternoon or evening) everyone! I am currently back home from a much needed ?rest? in the North Georgia mountains where I worked at Camp Hawkins. I really cannot call this work because the benefits that I receive while there far outweigh the asisstance that I give in the daily operation of the Camp.
For those of you who do not know what Camp Hawkins is; it is a Camp for developmentally disabled kids(8-21) in Mt. Airy,GA that is run by the GA Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries. It is a place where kids, regardless of disabilities, can go and feel like a kid. The kids come in for a four day period and we take them horseback riding, to ride go-karts, to a video arcade, bowling and of course non-stop on campus activities which includes arts and crafts, Bible Study, Music, Sports and Games and swimming.
They are given snacks throughout the day and of course breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided by a volunteer church group for each week. Camp Hawkins is definitely one of the best places on earth, and somewhere I go every year to bring me refreshment and renew my sense of awe in God as I watch what He does not only through these disabled kids, but also through their counselors. Each child is paired with their own individual counselor(depending on the severity of a kids disability they may have 2 counselors); this counselor(mostly college students) is there to provide around the clock care for their child. Sometimes this means little or no sleep for them, but it is amazing to watch how God is faithful as these counselors are faithful to Him.
Camp Hawkins is definitely the place to go if you need a refreshing reminder of the limitless love of our God! If you would like to read more about the Camp, and possibly see how you can help then visit, Camp Hawkins on the web.
I am aware of an urgent need for the Camp right now. This past summer, the bus of Love, the schoolbus(wheelchair accessible) that is used to transport the kids to and from various locations “blew” an engine, and they are in need of financial donations to get this problem resolved. If you have the means necessary, and would like to help then you can send a check to the GA Baptist Children’s Home and Family Ministries (GBCHFM) designated for the Camp Hawkin’s Bus. All donations are tax deductible.
