Good deeds
Numbers 10:2932, “Then Moses said to Hobab the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out to the place of which the LORD said, ‘I will give it to you’; come with us and we will do you good, for the LORD has promised good concerning Israel.” …So it will be, if you go with us, that whatever good the LORD does for us, we will do for you.”
Moses said to his brother in law, “Come with us because something good is going to happen, and if you’re with us then you are going to get blessed because of us!” THAT’S BIG TALKING! A lot of people of people would say thats really arrogant. Some people might even say that’s “putting the cart before the horse”. Moses, and the Israelites had not been blessed by God yet; shouldn’t they wait to make sure that God would follow through with His promise before they started telling other people that they would share it.
Moses put NO CONFIDENCE in himself. Read the book of Exodus. Moses did not want to go before Pharaoh and get the Israelites out of Egypt. He told God that he didn’t want to go, but eventually he relented. In the end He told God that he would go, but only if God went ahead of him. Moses knew that he could not do what God was asking, but he also knew that if God went ahead of Him that he could not be stopped! Over the months and years from the Israelites deliverance until now Moses had learned to take God at His word. It was not arrogance that caused Moses to tell Hobab that he would be blessed by following him, but it was confidence. Moses was confident that God was going to bless him, so he told Hobab that if he wanted a blessing to stay with him.
As human beings we have a tendency to hoard every good thing we get; a lot of people laugh and are sickened by that T.V. Show, Hoarders, but truth be told it is a show not just about some weird people; but it’s also a pretty realistic diagnosis of the human condition. In some way we are all hoarders! Maybe we don’t keep every newspaper or magazine for 30 years, but we’re usually not very eager to share, or give away, what we have. In the back of our mind we are always thinking if I give away what I have then I’m going to be without.
That’s not how things work with God. He has given us a promise; God has promised to bless us! That promise we have from God is never in danger of running out no matter how much of it we give away. In fact, I have learned that the more we give away of God’s blessings the more we get in return. Because God does not bless us to keep to ourselves, but to share with others; so they will be drawn to Him.
I Peter 3:9,”not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead ; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.” God has called us to inherit His blessing, and there is nothing that can take that blessing from us, but we are also called by Him to share that blessing with others.
