I know nothing
Deuteronomy 1:39, “Moreover, your little ones who you said would become a prey, and your sons, who this day have no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them and they shall possess it.”
Does anyone remember the television show Hogan’s Heros? Maybe not I think it came out in the mid-late 1960″s, it was pretty bad. It was about a group of War prisoners during WWII, anyway there was a German Seargent in that show who always said when asked a question, “I know nothing”.
That came to my mind when I read this verse. When it comes to evil, we need to be as clueless as that sergeant. I’m not saying that we should be dumb academically speaking, in fact I believe we have a responsibility to God to learn as much about His word as we can. The more we learn about His word the closer it will bring us to Him.
However, when it comes to the knowledge of evil then we must remain totally ignorant. We see here that the Lord did not allow the generation that He rescued from Egypt to enter into the Promised Land, but made them wander through the wilderness; and they died never knowing the fullness of His Grace.
The Promised Land was reserved for their children who had no knowledge of evil. Think with me back to the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve disobeyed God, and they ate from the tree that God forbade. Genesis 3:22-23 says: “Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil ; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.”
Man was expelled from the Garden because of his desire to know evil, and the Israelites were prolonged from entering the Promised Land because of their longing to seek that same knowledge.
In what is commonly referred to as the Lord’s Prayer Jesus tells us to ask God to protect us from evil. Matthew 6:9 “Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.10’Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.11’Give us this day our daily bread.12’And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.13’And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
My question is this, If the Lord Jesus told us to pray to God and ask for deliverance, protection, from evil then why would we run toward evil, and want to know about it more intimately.
It is the knowledge of evil that has kept man from having a full understanding of God’s Grace since the beginning of time.

Father, I thank You for protecting me from evil by sending Your Son, and I ask that when my heart desires to know the depths of evil You would remind me that there is no place for evil in Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen
