Choices
Deuteronomy 7:6, “For you are a holy people to the LORD your God ; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.”
The Israelites were chosen by God, and they could not get away from it. God had picked them as His possession, and that was that. Of course, they had already been receiving blessings from God because of their favored status. If they were going to continue receiving blessings like they had, the nations which were in the Promised Land at that time had to be totally destroyed. As I have said before some of God’s commands to the Israelites look as if they are cruel, at first reading. God told the Israelites that they should wipe out everything before them. God did not want any remnant of the ungodly nations left because He knew that any amount of ungodliness could slowly infect His people and the Godly life that He had given them would be destroyed.
It may seem odd to think that people have the power to thwart, or at least interfere, with God’s plan, but in a way we do. If we choose to disobey then His desire to bring us a blessing might be temporarily impaired. We know that in the end God will bless all of His children who have called on the name of Jesus for salvation, but until the Lord’s return we can miss out on the blessings from God because of disobedience.
As Christians we are called to a life that is set apart, sanctified, for God. We are to separate ourselves from the things of this world because God knows that if we allow the things of earth in our life now then our future life with Him will be interfered with.II Corinthians 6:16 says, “Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols ? For we are the temple of the living God ; just as God said, “I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE. 17 “Therefore, COME OUT FROM THEIR MIDST AND BE SEPARATE,” says the Lord. “AND DO NOT TOUCH WHAT IS UNCLEAN ; And I will welcome you. 18 “And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.”
If you or I choose to join in with the things of this world we will suffer the hardships that accompany those choices.
