It’s not on us!
Deuteronomy 6:1, “Now this is the commandment, the statutes and the judgments which the LORD your God has commanded me to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you are going over to possess it,”
Moses was one of the greatest, Godliest, men in the Old Testament, probably the entire Bible. His greatness is mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11, “The Faith Chapter”, following the will of God He singlehandedly(almost) led the Israelites out of captivity. God gave him the Ten Commandements, God spoke to him, when the Israelites had a problem they came to him. Most of the success while the Israelites wandered in the wilderness was credited to him.
However, Moses was unable to do one thing, because of his humanity he could not complete the requirements that God placed on the Israelites, and that command of God was/and is simple. God commanded the Israelites to do the things that He had commanded, and if they did them their days would be long in the land that He was giving them. God demanded perfect obedience from the Israelites!God still demands perfect obedience from His children!
Jesus said in Matthew 7:24.”Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.25″And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house ; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.26″Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.27″The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house ; and it fell -and great was its fall.”
The biggest condemnation that Jesus had for the Religous Elite of His day was that they were not following the Commands of God; they knew what the commands were, but they followed their own “lusts” rather than God’s commands. Jesus even went so far as to tell them that if they went to church, or synagogue, but then did what they wanted at other times they were nothing more than “white-washed graves”. They might have a beautiful sign, but underneath all the good looks their was nothing but dead bones.
There are many people still today who fit into the condemnation of Jesus. We might clean up real good, and go to church, but unless we are following God’s command then we we are just putting on a show. God still demands perfection from us today!
Jesus said in Matthew 5:48″Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
I don’t know about you, but that sounds impossible to me. There is no way that I can be as perfect as God is, and to be honest my mind does not want to be perfect all the time.
You see that’s where the Israelites missed the message from God. He does not want us to be perfect apart from Him, in fact He knows that we can not be perfect apart from Him. That’s why Jesus came; to give us an example, and that’s why He wants to live in us through His Spirit, so that we can have the perfection He requires. It’s not on us; it’s on Him! All we have to do is agree to follow Him, and He will make us perfect!!

Father, I thank You for demanding perfection from me, and for sending me Your Spirit to allow me to live out that perfection. In Jesus’ name, Amen
