Doubting God
Judges 6:40, “God did so that night ; for it was dry only on the fleece, and dew was on all the ground.”
I think the story of Gideon is one of the most hilarious, ironic stories in the Bible. When the angel of God first appeared to Gideon, he was in wine-press beating, or separating, wheat. Separating wheat, in old days, required tossing the wheat in the air and allowing the wind to carry away the barley from the kernel. Gideon was in a wine-press doing this. There’s not a lot of wind inside a wine-press, but Gideon was inside trying to hide from the Midianites. He was scared that they were going to steal the wheat, Gideon was a coward! But, the angel of God called him a “valiant warrior”?
The angel told him that God was going to rescue Israel through him. I imagine Gideon must have thought to himself, if he didn’t say it out loud, “Are you crazy?” Gideon’s doubts remained with him, but he undoubtedly remembered what the angel said. As time passed he told God that he really did not believe this, but to see if it was true he gave God some tests. Each time he tested God; God passed the test, and eventually Gideon did rescue the Israelites.
Many times we question God because sometimes His commands to us don’t make a lot of sense to us. But I believe God doesn’t condemn us because we doubt Him, when His commands to us don’t make much sense He wants us to “question” Him because our questions only prove that we can trust Him to be faithful.
I remember 18 years ago when God asked me to go on my first mission trip I thought to myself, probably much like Gideon, “Are You crazy?” But over and over again God answered my questions. I went on my first mission trip in 1993, and since then God has used me to shine His glory. I don’t want anyone to get confused about who worked through me because I could not do the things alone, but only through the power of God have I been able to accomplish His will, and many people have seen His power working through me.
God does not mind our questions, or doubts, as long as we are faithful to Him! The definition of a hero is a person who does what they have to do regardless of any questions or doubts they may have. Will you be God’s hero?
