The Good Things
I Samuel 9, “20…And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel ? Is it not for you and for all your father’s household ?” 21 Saul replied, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin ? Why then do you speak to me in this way ?” 22 Then Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who were invited…”
Saul was sent on a journey to look for donkeys that had wandered off. Isn’t it amazing how sometimes we think we are doing simple, mundane activities, and all of a sudden God shows up where we least expect Him. Think about Matthew, he was sitting at his tax collecting job; and Jesus came to him to call him as a disciple. I’m sure Matthew was not expecting to encounter God that day, but He showed up anyway. I see in this that God is everywhere; even when are totally oblivious to His presence to His presence!
Saul encountered the prophet Samuel, and Samuel said some pretty amazing things to Saul; but Saul’s first response was one of total disbelief. He said who am I? I’m nobody, and you’re talking to me like I’m this great person; what’s up with that? We all need to have the mindset of Saul because no matter how good we may think we are we are nobody before God. Isaiah 64:6 says, “For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment…” There is nothing that we have done or can do that will make us worthy before God, but He loves us anyway, and He has invited us to share in all of His good things.
Matthew 25:33 says, “…’Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” God prepared the feast(good things) that wait for us in Heaven from the very beginning, and there is nothing we can do to earn an invitation! The invitation has been made by the sacrifice of Jesus, and all we must do is accept!!!
