The Difference Maker
I Samuel 18:12, “Now Saul was afraid of David, for the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.”
King Saul recognized that David had something in him that was desirable. Saul saw David in a spirit of jealousy. I believe that this jealousy was founded on two things.
One he was jealous of the “celebrity status” that the people of Israel had ascribed to David. I Samuel 18:7 The women sang as they played, and said, “Saul has slain his thousands, And David his ten thousands.” 8 Then Saul became very angry, for this saying displeased him; and he said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, but to me they have ascribed thousands. Now what more can he have but the kingdom ?” Saul was scared because he was worried that David was going to take what he thought belonged to him, and he wanted to protect what he thought belonged to him.
Many times people in a position of power see someone who everybody likes, and they get scared that they might lose what they have. This is an understandable fear from a human viewpoint because none of us want to lose what we have, and this fear causes one of two responses. We either get resentful, and try to get rid of the threat or we work harder to hold the position we have.
Secondly, Saul something in David that he once had, and he was jealous to get it back. Whenever we spend time with God there is a difference in our lives that other people recognize. Look at the disciples of Jesus. These few men spent 3 years walking and living with God in the flesh, and their was such a difference made in their lives that they changed the world. One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Acts 4:13, “Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus.”
The religious leaders were in awe of the disciples because they were nobodies in their eyes yet here they were speaking in boldness and confidence about God.
God is a difference maker in our lives when we spend time with Him!!!
