My Kinsmen Redeemer
Ruth 3:9, “…So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative.”
The story of Ruth is, like many great stories in the Old Testament, a mirror for the Gospel. Look at the story of Abraham and Isaac. Father Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac at the command of God, but before he did God came in the picture; and offered a suitable replacement. Joseph was picked on and abused by his brothers; eventually it was Joseph who would save his brothers from certain death in a famine. Daniel refused to obey the orders of the king to stop praying to God, and God saved him from death in the lion’s den. There are many more stories in the Old Testament that point us to the cross, and the grace that God would show us through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
Ruth, even though she was not an Israelite, was faithful to God in caring for her mother-in-law Naomi; and God rewarded her faithfulness by sending her to glean in the field of Boaz. Naomi realized that Ruth could be redeemed by her kinsmen, so she told her what to do to fulfill the law; and seek Boaz’s redemptive ability.
We also have a kinsmen redeemer who seeks to save us from death! His name is Jesus Christ, and just as Ruth asked Boaz to “spread his covering” over her to save her; we must simply ask Jesus ask Jesus to cover us, and save us from certain death.
Jesus said in Luke 13:34, “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it!”
Jesus Christ stands ready to cover us with His protection all we must do is ask Him!

Father God, I thank You for seeking me to cover with Your protection, and I ask that You would help me know that only Your protection can save me from the death ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen
