Aim small, miss small
“For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” I Corinthians 2:2
Some people call this “tunnel vision”, it’s when a person gets so fixated on there goal that they forget about everything around. In military aviation this is called “target fixation”, when a pilot becomes so concerned with the target he/she is after then they can lose regard for the safety of themseles and their crew. At times “tunnel vision” can be a bad thing because it is dangerous, and we lose “peripheral vision” because we are very intently focused on what lies ahead.
However, when we are certain that what lies ahead of us is Gods will then tunnel vision is very beneficial not only for us, but also for those around us. Listen to the words that Luke wrote in his Gospel about Jesus, Luke 9:51 “Now it came to pass, when the time had come for Him to be received up; that He steadfastly set His face to go to Jerusalem.” I get the image in my mind that Jesus got “the look” in His eyes, and He was going to do God’s will no matter what. Jesus got tunnel vision, or “target fixation”; but His target was God’s will. When you, or I get fixated on douing what God wants then “tunnel vision” is good.
I have mentioned before that I like Mel Gibson movies because they are manly, beat your chest and howl at the moon movies, but there are also some messages in his movies that you can pick up on if you pay close attention. In his movie “The Patriot” there is a scene where he and his youngest two sons are goinng to rescue his oldest son from captivity. In that scene, before the shooting begins, he reminds his boys that if they aim small, they will miss small. In other words he’s saying that if they keep a small target, or a singular focus, then they will never be far from that target.
There is a lot of wisdom in that advice that can be carried over into the Christian walk. If we never forget what lies ahead, but always fix our gaze on the cross then we will never be far from the path that God has directed us to.

Father, I thank You for guiding me down Your path of salvation, and I ask that You help me to keep my focus on Your Son even when I fall, and stray off course I know that You will gently bring me back to Your way. In Jesus’ name, Ame.

Hi Steve, that is just a great message- one that we sometimes forget. The enemy cannot steal a believer from Christ, but he can get us to take our focus from the truth and dwell on our circumstance instead of Christ. We know that it was not the wind and the waves that took Peter down as he walked on the water. It was his fear. He focused on the wind and the waves that came against him instead of the Master over them. We all do that at some point in our lives. Thanks for the reminder to keep our eyes on the only One that matters!
yeah my dad will like this
