Food of the Word
“For though by this time, you ought to be teachers, you have need for someone to teach you again the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.” Hebrews 5:12
Have you ever eaten baby food? The fruit is usually pretty good, but the rest of it is horrible. It has no seasoning, and is very bland. I know because after my wreck I could not chew and swallow “regular” food properly. I had to eat what amounted to baby food. After you have sunk your teeth into a juicy T-Bone then baby food is disgusting and a little demeaning. When you are forced to eat baby food then you are reminded of what “real” food tastes like. Adults, at least all the ones I know, prefer to eat a T-Bone instead of Gerber’s Carrots.
That’s exactly what the writer of Hebrews was telling the people in the church. Even though they had been exposed to, and taught the truth they had reverted back “infanthood”, and once again needed to be handfed or take a bottle instead of partaking in the juicy T-Bones of God. These men and women knew the truth, and accepted and believed everything that they had been taught yet somewhere along the way they had forgotten what they had learned. Hebrews 5:11 says that they had become “dull of hearing”. They were no longer allowing the Spirit to prick their hearts with the Word. People such as this remind me of the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 13. Jesus said in verse 22, “The one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the Word, and the worries of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” When you and I hear the truth, but then allow the concerns of this world to overtake our thoughts again then we are becoming like those people that the writer of Hebrews was talking to. We become dull of hearing concerning Spiritual things.
Jesus Christ, in His resurrection, gave us the example that we should follow. We are told in John 20 that Jesus first removed the head wrappings that were put on Him during His burial so that He could clearly see, and then He removed the other wrappings that were around Him. If you and I wish to follow the leading of the Spirit then we must remove those things in our life that make us “dull of hearing” then we will be able to clearly see the path that God has laid out for us.

Father, I thank You for teaching me Your truths, and I ask that You would guard my heart so that I do not become dull of hearing, but am always responsive to Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
