A Love Story

Genesis 29:30, “So Jacob went in to Rachel also, and indeed he loved Rachel more than Leah, and he served with Laban for another seven years.”

The story of Jacob and Rachel is one of the most poignant, heart-touching stories in the Bible. It tells us how Jacob worked for seven years to get Rachel as his wife; then at the end of seven years he was tricked, deceived by Laban, Rachel’s father, and given Leah as his wife instead.

My favorite part of that story is found in verse 20; Genesis 29:20 says, “20 So Jacob served seven years for Rachel and they seemed to him but a few days because of his love for her” Certainly Jacob did not care about working, or whatever else he needed to do to get the love of Rachel because he knew that she was the one. After, he was tricked by Laban into marrying Leah I don’t think he had to give a second thought to the idea of working another seven years to get the one that he truly loved. I see in this story a perfect, mirrorred reflection of the Gospel.

God loved us, and He came after us just like Jacob was sent by his father into his own people so Jesus was sent by His Father into His own people so that He could find a bride.  Just as Laban deceived Jacob we try and deceive God by telling Him almost everyday that we will be faithful and serve Him tomorrow. And just like Jacob, God continues to be with us and bless us because of His great love for us. We see in the things that He has given, and the price that He paid that He is saying they seemed to Him as nothing because of His great love for us. Just like Jacob considered it nothing to labor for 14 years to get the one that he wanted God consider’s everything, even death on a cross, to be nothing in comparison to getting the one that He loves.

We cannot understand the great love of God for us! No matter what we do the love of God is beyond our comprehension. King David wrote in Psalm 22:6, “But I am a worm and not a man,…” We are nothing before God; we are less than nothing, but God loves us anyway! That is impossible for us to wrap our brains around.

The Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:12, “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face ; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known.” But, I don’t think that we will ever understand the love of God, not even in Heaven.

So, today quit trying to figure it out; just accept, and bask it! You will find joy and peace like you never imagined!!!
